Introducing Duet Solo

As long as I can remember I have created and composed music, but I lacked the confidence and bravery to claim the title musician. Growing up in the church choir, singing in college concert choir, and receiving three years of operatic vocal training for theatre, left me with a strong desire to take my passion for music a step further. It wasn’t until the divorce of my first marriage in 2017 that I took songwriting seriously, needing an outlet for the depth of emotions I was feeling.

Fueled by a new found resolve and confidence, in 2020 I released a full-length single titled “Slow” under my artist name Duet Solo. While my roots will forever be grounded in gospel and hymnals, 80s RnB, and a bit of Opera, Duet Solo is all about fusion inspired by Blues & Soul, Hip Hop and EDM. “Slow” is available on most streaming platforms including Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music, Tidal, iHeart Radio and more.

Song Writing Process

A behind the scenes look at how I began the process of writing the song "Remember Me."

After making the chord progression, I thought the song was going to be a dark love story…I really didn’t think I’d end up writing about Slavery, and in a style almost like musical theatre, but these words just started pouring out of me. After receiving feedback from my songwriting cohort I decided to play the chord progressions in two variations, sing both lower and higher octaves, make sure the pre-chorus led to a chorus that soared and exploded.

I started with a focus on lyrics rather than having a sound to write to. This was a challenge for me. I knew that after writing my previous song "Remember Me" I wanted to try an uplifting song that felt like an anthem. I struggled for quite a while to come up with the message, and couldn't settle on what music genre I thought it played well in. Ultimately I decided to explore what this song would feel like if I let go of controlling it's format and structure.
